This was way more fun than I expected. I went in bracing for a formulaic missing-person thriller and got something sharper and funnier.
The setup is simple. Stephanie is a sweet mommy vlogger who befriends Emily, a glamorous, sharp-tongued woman who seems to have it all. Then Emily vanishes, and Stephanie starts digging into a life full of secrets. The deeper she goes, the messier and more dangerous it gets.
Blake Lively steals the whole thing. She plays Emily: a firecracker you can’t predict, funny one second and a little scary the next. You never know what she’s actually capable of, and that unpredictability is the engine of the movie. Anna Kendrick matches her, slowly peeling away the nice-girl act as Stephanie gets pulled in over her head.
The best part is how they play off each other. There’s this quiet moment where Stephanie starts picking up Emily’s habits, right down to how she holds a martini. Tiny detail, but it tells you everything about who has the power and who’s falling under a spell.
Paul Feig directs with real style. Everything looks sleek and polished, and he knows exactly when to let a scene breathe for a laugh and when to tighten the screws.
Funny, twisty, and just a little wicked. If that sounds like your kind of night, this one’s an easy pick.
